In today’s world teachers, coaches and parents all want to know what motivates people. The answer you’ll find will come down to experiences and caring. Great coaches like Al McGuire, Tom Izzo, Coach K all have the same technique in common—they care about their players on and off the playing court.
High-performing athletes must believe that the hard work that they put in will pay off in the long run. They can’t be deterred from their dreams by a missed pass, a harsh word, or lost game. Even if they can’t run their goal time today—they have to believe that they are capable—or the battle is lost before it began.

We need to foster the belief in our children that this is a journey. We aren’t ‘stuck’ where we’re at. We can work hard and break through to the next level of performance. However, we can’t lose the connection to the idea of allowing failure. “Learn, learn, learn” doesn’t actually happen if the penalty kick is always successful. We have to cultivate an environment where we encourage full effort AND celebrate the failures.
